Ways to Make the Most Out of Your Retirement

Retirement is a phase that has the potential to be the most rewarding if you enrich it by doing things that are meaningful for you, your family and society. According to a recent HSBC survey, 58% of pre-retirees aged 45 and above want to retire in five years if they could. Here’s a list of things that can make retirement satisfying:

  1. Pursuing your passion or a new interest

    Freedom from a 9-to-5 work routine gives you the time to discover and pursue new self-fulfilling and gratifying activities. You could work as a volunteer at humanitarian organizations, complete that book you’ve been working on or venture into the world of entrepreneurship. As shown by the rapid growth of the ecommerce industry in Indonesia, technological advances have made it easier than ever for anyone to set up a business. You can also consider putting the knowledge and skills you have honed over the decades to good use by becoming an independent consultant in your area of expertise.

  2. Spending quality time with family

    Fifty-eight percent of retirees in the survey reported feeling happier as a result of the ability to spend quality time with their families, while 48% reported an increase in the quality of relationships with their partners after retiring. It is evident then, that focusing your attention on your spouse, children or grandchildren can be greatly rewarding to you and your family. Be it sending your grandchild to school or babysitting them once a week, these things give birth to unforgettable moments that they will cherish for the rest of their lives. As they say, it’s the small things in life that make you happy.

  3. Living a healthier lifestyle

    About 54% of retirees reported improved health compared to 47% of those who have yet to retire. It’s when you’re not being bombarded with intensive, time-consuming demands at work that you’re more likely to think about maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. Taking part in community-based sports or physical activities has multiple merits - it allows you to exercise while socializing and meeting new people at the same time. Examples include Tai-Chi, swimming, line dancing or ballroom dancing.

  4. Traveling the world

    Forty-seven percent of pensioners in the survey reported having a desire to travel the world. People generally derive a lot of pleasure from anticipation, so it would be worthwhile to start researching and writing a list of destinations that you have always wanted to visit. If the destination requires travelling long distances, ensure you are physically fit and as much as possible, avoid those with poor infrastructure and access. It may be a good idea to enlist the help of a travel specialist to craft an itinerary that is suitable for you in order to ensure a smooth, relaxing trip.

    As the American pastor Harry Emerson Fosdick once said, “Don’t simply retire from something; have something to retire to”. Make your retirement valuable and meaningful, and you can be certain that it will be the most beautiful phase of your life.
