Look for evidence that the Internet merchant is using some security to protect your credit card data such as the icons showing that they use SSL security.
Make sure that you know the merchant and that this is a genuine and reputable merchant, double check the name and Internet address of the merchant.
NEVER give your PIN on the Internet.
Some sites require a credit card number before allowing a view of the "goods" for sale. Be aware that in many cases this results in a credit card charge whether you wish to buy or not.
Please take care and remember that identifying a merchant on the Internet is more difficult and requires more attention than elsewhere.
