Career Story

I joined HSBC in May 2007 as Head of Global Markets Sales. It was quite an experience considering I was joining a much bigger institution compare to previous one. In addition I have to cover a much bigger team and the challenge definitely back then was on people management. At the beginning of transition period I have to adjust the mindset and at the same time working along HSBC Culture. There are differences in internal policy and not to mentioned bigger customer groups that we have to deal with. Fortunately with the support of many fellow colleagues, I managed to settle down well and starts to appreciate some of the new things here in HSBC. Moving on from my initial role, I was appointed as Deputy Head of Global Markets in 2010 and recently in 2011 being trusted by management as Co-Head of Global Markets.

What I like the most about HSBC is its working environment and business platform. It has a very solid business platform and it's a just a matter of how to leverage the business further. Many foreign competitors envy to have the kind of business in HSBC with wide coverage and complete product capability. Support from regional management also has been great especially in promoting connectivity among different regions.

I have learned from the leadership caliber among regional management and it inspire us to pursue our goal and maximize our potential. Seeing many locals being given opportunity to lead also motivates us to go beyond our comfort zone and continue exploring.

Started with HSBC in 1996 as Staff Officer Internal Control. After a year, I joined the Management Trainee programme of HSBC and since then has been working in various department including Corporate Recovery Unit, Commercial Banking (CMB) and HSBC Securities Services (HSS). In 2005, I transferred to HSBC Hong Kong working in the Custody and Clearing regional office and went back to Jakarta in 2008 to take over the role of Senior VP Custody and Clearing within HSBC Securities Services.

HSBC has a strong working culture and gives a heavy emphasize on employee development.

The various opportunities that are available at HSBC give me motivation to keep challenging myself and reach out my potential.

HSBC is a Company that gives opportunity to its people to progress. People across department and even across region interact and can work relatively well together to accomplish business objective.

Given the various posting, I gain knowledge on most aspect of personal banking business which is important to support me to progress my career further.

I joined HSBC in July 2007 as Treasury Finance Assistant reported to Head of Treasury Finance. In general my job description are as a Global Market Product Controller & Market Risk and responsible for the financial statement for Treasury accounts. It was quite tough in the first year especially with the capacity with the new joiner and building a new team due to high turnover. Afterwards, I had a great team that had given support and solid team work for my last role in IMO as AVP Treasury Finance.
The most exciting moment during my time in HSBC is when I got the opportunity to work abroad/other HSBC sites in December 2010 to Johannesburg, South Africa within Treasury Finance team. The main reason that I decided to go ahead with this opportunity was I could learn what other sites are doing in term of products, process, efficiency etc which will enhance my knowledge and meet different people in different country. After the 6 months period in South Africa, I am currently working in Global Market Finance team for 1-2 years assignment in HSBC Malaysia.

Good Networking within other country and enjoyable working environment. Working in back office jobs in HSBC still require communication and interaction with regional and other HSBC country. It improves the knowledge and networking even though you do not do front office roles.
HSBC recognize the effort of what the employees has done for the bank and try to provide a comfortable place to be worked at. Annual Employee survey is conducted to listen are the staff feedback about the bank and also a few fun activities such as staff party, gathering, team building etc are conducted to balance the working life environment within the bank.

HSBC as the world local bank with branches all over the world, give me the opportunity and possibilities to work in different country to enhance my knowledge and skills. I have never thought before that I could have a chance to work abroad while working in HSBC. The support that I received from Indonesia management and Asia Pacific Regional give me the motivation and confidence that I should be able to do it.

My role here is a GBM Turkey Onshoring Program Manager. I have been asked to help manage the overall program of onshoring of these 13 systems in a manner that is acceptable to all stakeholders and parties involved.

Project and Program Management is quite complexed itself but the real challenge is how to manage or even transform a culture.

There's much to learn and experience from being abroad far away from your family and friends. Along the way you'll make new ones and this is priceless. The door is there, HSBC presents this door to all of us - we just need to knock. This is a great place to work and it provides limitless opportunites.

My role as act Project Management Officer within Satellite sites technology team, works together with all Global Banking Market Information Technology Relationship Managers from across 20 countries in Asia Pacific, to keep on top of the financial, management information, and various project.

I did not have any significant difficulty in my first days since all colleagues and my manager here have been very welcome and supportive to any new joiner. Given the fact that I previously took up GBM IT RM role in IMO simply make the beginning of my journey here too good to be true. Indeed it is very interesting to join such a highly international team, my boss is from UK, my team mates are from various countries such as HK, China, India, Canada, and Singapore.

Short Term Attachment (STA) is a good program that I would really recommend as this is truly one of advantages working in HSBC which offers many international mobility opportunities. Lastly, let me share the message that I got before my STA began: "Do it not only for yourself but for our country. We need to show the world that Indonesians have what it takes too :)"
