HSBC Launches Banking On Survival Campaign To Celebrate World Environment Day 2010
**Invites students and staff to preserve bio-diversity through daily activities**
 

HSBC Group is supporting the United Nations' World Environment Day (WED) on 5 June 2010 "International Year of Biodiversity". This year, HSBC as a group is adopting the same theme to its campaign. The campaign has been branded "Banking on survival" aiming to raise awareness of the impact human activity is having on different species' survival/biodiversity. Further to that, HSBC is dedicating Month of June 2010 as World Environment Month, where a series of environmental activities that will be conducted throughout the time at HSBC Indonesia.

The global initiative is locally launched at HSBC Office Menara Mulia Building, Jakarta in collaboration with WWF Indonesia, involving 500 staff and 60 elementary students from HSBC's schools partners. Rakesh Bhatia, CEO HSBC Indonesia, officially initiated the campaign, together with Dr. Efransjah, CEO WWF Indonesia and Nadine Chandrawinata, former Miss Indonesia and environmentalist.

Rakesh Bhatia, Chief Executive Officer HSBC Indonesia said, "HSBC is committed to addressing the impacts of climate change. We are delighted to have year 2010 to be declared as The International Year of Biodiversity. World Environment Day is a good opportunity to send out the message across our employees on the importance to do something to save our biodiversity in their everyday activities. Through this momentum, we'd like to encourage staff awareness about species under threat and find out how to save the biodiversity through our daily and concrete activities."

Through this event, HSBC also made real contribution for biodiversity conservation in Indonesia. For every staff attendance during the launching event today, HSBC will donate IDR100.000 / person for WWF's Sumatran Tiger Conservation Program called Sahabat Harimau.

Series of environmental activities were conducted during the launching event, starting with Bike to Work,  Carpooling, Biodiversity Talk Show, Photosynthesis experiment & recycle product workshop, and the showcase of "WWF Panda Mobile". The bank also initiated some internal campaigns, which were focused to build environmental awareness among the staff, including "Two Side Printing program".

"It is very important that we engage our employees worldwide on environmental   initiatives to raise their awareness so that they can be part of the solution. World Environment Day is a good opportunity to get this message across", Bhatia added.

Series of environmental initiatives will soon follow today's kick off event, including voluntary program to conservation area at Pesanggrahan area, biodiversity photo exhibition, and save energy internal campaign. All of these up-coming programmes are conducted not only to support HSBC's worldwide efforts to address growing concerns about climate change but also to grow HSBC footprint in Indonesia, a country it's called home for 126 years.
